Doraemon is one of the most loved characters in Japan. He's a blue, cat-shaped robot who comes back in time from the 22nd century to help a boy named Nobita, who is bad at school and sports. Doraemon has a pocket on his stomach full of gadgets from the future, like the Anywhere Door, which takes you anywhere you want, and a small propeller you put on your head to fly.
The manga was created by Fujiko F. Fujio and first appeared in children's magazines in December 1969. The TV anime has been on the air on TV Asahi since 1979. What I find interesting is that the stories are set in an ordinary Japanese neighborhood, with small houses, empty lots, and kids playing after school.
That's one reason the Ministry of Foreign Affairs made Doraemon an "anime ambassador" in 2008. The stories are funny, but they're also about friendship, kindness, and what happens when you rely too much on shortcuts.
