If you want to know where Japanese TV anime came from, Tetsuwan Atomu is a good place to start. In English, it's known as Astro Boy. It was created by Osamu Tezuka, who is often called the god of manga, and it first appeared as a manga in the early 1950s. Atom is a robot who looks like a young boy but has super strength and can fly.
He was built by a scientist who had lost his son, and many of the stories ask what it really means to be human. The TV version began on January 1st, 1963. It was made by Tezuka's own studio and aired once a week in a 30-minute slot. That became the standard pattern for Japanese TV anime.
To save time and money, the studio reused drawings and kept movement simple, and these tricks are often said to have shaped the look of anime for years. The show was also sold to the United States, so it was one of the first Japanese cartoons many Americans ever saw.
