Dentoteki kogeihin is a legal term for crafts designated by Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry under a 1974 law. To qualify, a craft must be made mainly by hand for everyday use, with techniques and materials that go back over 100 years, in an area with enough makers to form a production center. As of October 2025, 244 items had been designated, including tools and materials for crafts.

In Japan, you'll often hear the phrase "traditional crafts," but dentoteki kogeihin means something more specific. It's a legal term for crafts designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry under a law passed in 1974. The law came at a time when many local crafts were struggling to compete with cheap, mass-produced goods.
To be designated, a craft has to meet several conditions. It must be something used mainly in daily life. The main steps must be done by hand. The techniques and materials must have a history of more than 100 years. And it must come from a production area with a certain number of makers, usually at least ten businesses or thirty workers.
Well-known examples include Wajima lacquerware, Nishijin textiles, and Nambu ironware. As of October 2025, there were 244 designated items, after hand-carved name seals from Tokyo were added that month. I like this system because it protects not just famous artists, but whole towns of ordinary craftspeople.
Is it the same as a Living National Treasure?
No. A Living National Treasure is a person recognized for a skill, under a different system. Dentoteki kogeihin are types of products from a particular area, like Wajima lacquerware.
How can I tell if something is the real thing?
Look for the official sticker with the dento mark. Products can carry it after passing an inspection that checks they were made with the traditional methods and materials.
Why does a craft need 100 years of history?
The law is meant to protect crafts with deep roots in a region. The 100-year rule shows that the skills have been passed down over generations, not invented recently.
