Wajima-nuri is lacquerware made in the town of Wajima on the Noto peninsula. What sets it apart is the undercoat: powdered diatomaceous earth from the area is mixed into the lacquer and cloth is glued over the weak points, which makes the finished piece tough enough for daily use. It passes through more than a hundred steps and many pairs of hands.

Wajima-nuri is the lacquerware of a small town on the Noto peninsula, and the thing to understand about it is the undercoat. Wajima sits on ground rich in diatomaceous earth, a soft rock made of fossil algae.
The workshops burn it, grind it to powder and mix it into raw lacquer to build the base layers, and they glue cloth over the rim and the foot where a bowl takes knocks. That is why a Wajima bowl survives being washed every day for decades, while decorative lacquer elsewhere may not.
The making is divided: the wood turner, the undercoat specialist, the polisher, the decorator are different people, and a single piece passes through well over a hundred steps. In January 2024 an earthquake struck the peninsula and destroyed workshops, tools and stock. The craft is rebuilding, and buying a piece now is not only buying an object.
QWhy is it so expensive?
Because of the number of steps and the drying time. Each layer of lacquer has to harden in a humid cabinet before the next goes on, so a single bowl can take months, and several different craftspeople are paid along the way.
QCan I actually use it, or is it for display?
Use it. That is what the reinforced undercoat is for. Wash it by hand with a soft sponge, avoid the dishwasher and long soaking, and it will outlast most of your other dishes.
QWhat happened in the 2024 earthquake?
The quake and the fire that followed destroyed a large part of the town, including workshops, kilns, tools and finished stock. Craftspeople are working to restart, some from temporary premises elsewhere.
