Beppu sits on the side of a volcano on the east coast of Kyushu, and steam rises from drains, gardens and hillsides all over the city. It has by far the most hot spring sources in Japan and the greatest volume of water. Eight distinct spring areas make up the town. There are also the jigoku, hot ponds far too hot to bathe in, colored red or cobalt by their minerals, which you visit and look at.
別府は九州の東岸、火山の斜面にあり、町のいたるところ、側溝からも庭からも山の斜面からも湯気が上がっています。源泉の数も湧出量も、日本で群を抜いて多い土地です。八つの温泉の地区が集まって一つの町をなしています。地獄と呼ばれる池もあります。入るには熱すぎ、成分によって赤や青に色づいた池で、これは見るためのものです。

Beppu is the place to take someone who thinks they have seen a hot spring town. It sits on the flank of a volcano on the east coast of Kyushu, and the ground beneath it is so active that steam comes up through drains, out of garden walls and off the hillsides, so the whole city is visibly venting.
It has more hot spring sources than anywhere else in Japan and by far the largest volume of water, which means bathing here is cheap and ordinary: small neighborhood bathhouses charge a couple of hundred yen and are used by residents rather than tourists. The town is really eight separate spring districts with different water.
There are also the jigoku, the hells — ponds of spring water far too hot to enter, one cobalt blue from dissolved iron sulphate, one blood red from iron oxide — which you tour and look at, not bathe in. And there is sand bathing, where you lie on the beach and an attendant buries you in sand heated from below by the spring water.
温泉街ならもう見た、という人を連れて行くなら別府です。九州の東岸、火山の斜面にあり、地下があまりに活発なので、側溝からも庭の塀からも山の斜面からも湯気が上がります。町全体が目に見えて噴いている。
源泉の数は日本一、湧出量も群を抜いています。つまりここでは風呂が安く、当たり前のものです。町の小さな共同浴場は二百円ほどで、旅行者より地元の人が使っています。町は実際には八つの温泉地区の集まりで、湯の質もそれぞれ違います。
地獄もあります。入るには熱すぎる池で、硫酸鉄が溶けて青くなったもの、酸化鉄で血のように赤いもの。これは巡って眺めるもので、浸かるものではありません。砂湯もあります。浜に横たわると、係の人が、下から湯で温められた砂をかけてくれます。

No. They are close to boiling. One of them is used to steam eggs and pudding for visitors, which is as close as you get.
入れません。沸騰に近い温度です。そのうちの一つは卵やプリンを蒸すのに使われていて、近づけるのはそこまでです。
QWhat is a sand bath like?
砂湯はどんなものですか。
You wear a cotton robe, lie in a trough on the beach, and are covered with hot sand up to the neck for about ten minutes. It is heavy and warm, and ten minutes is enough.
浴衣を着て浜の溝に横たわり、首まで温かい砂をかけられます。十分ほど。重くて温かく、十分で充分です。
QIs it expensive?
お金はかかりますか。
The opposite. Municipal and neighborhood bathhouses often cost a few hundred yen, and because water is abundant, even modest inns have their own spring.
むしろ安いです。市営や町内の浴場は数百円のことが多く、湯が豊富なので、質素な宿でも自前の源泉を持っています。

別府市の源泉数は2,832、総湧出量は毎分約10万2千リットルで、いずれも市町村別の日本一とされる（別府市発表、令和6年度）。市内は別府・浜脇・観海寺・堀田・明礬・鉄輪・柴石・亀川の八つに分かれ、別府八湯と呼ばれる。海地獄の青はおもに硫酸鉄によるもの、血の池地獄の赤は酸化鉄によるものとされる。明礬地獄には、湯の花を採るための藁葺きの小屋が並び、その製法は国の重要無形民俗文化財に指定されている。
