Some springs are near boiling and are not for bathing; they are looked at instead. Yufuin, half an hour inland, is smaller, greener and built around small inns and galleries.

Beppu is the largest hot spring town in Japan by a wide margin. It has around two thousand eight hundred sources, roughly a tenth of all the sources in the country, and more than eighty thousand liters a minute come out of the ground.
You notice it before you arrive: steam rising between houses all over the hillside. Some of the springs are close to boiling, so they cannot be bathed in, and those became a sightseeing circuit called the hells, seven pools of different colors that you walk around and look at.
There are also sand baths where an attendant buries you in hot volcanic sand up to the neck. Half an hour inland is Yufuin, which is the opposite in feel: a small town under a twin-peaked mountain, with footbaths, small inns and craft shops. People often do both in one trip, one loud and one quiet.
別府は、日本最大の温泉地です。しかも差が大きい。源泉はおよそ2800、全国の源泉のおよそ一割にあたり、湧き出す量は毎分8万リットルを超えます。着く前から気づきます。斜面一面の家々のあいだから湯気が立ち上っているからです。
沸騰に近い源泉もあって入れません。そこが「地獄」と呼ばれる見物の道すじになりました。色の違う七つの池を歩いて回ります。砂湯もあります。係の人が、熱い砂に首まで埋めてくれます。
30分ほど内陸には湯布院があり、こちらは趣が正反対です。二つの峰の山の下の小さな町に、足湯と小さな宿と工芸の店が並びます。一度の旅で両方、にぎやかなほうと静かなほうを回る人が多いです。

地獄には入れるのですか。
No. Those pools are near boiling and are for looking at. But some of the sites have footbaths fed by cooled water from the same source, and ordinary bath houses are everywhere in the town.
入れません。あの池は沸騰に近く、見るためのものです。ただ、同じ源泉を冷ました足湯がある所はありますし、町には普通の浴場がいくらでもあります。
QIs it Yufuin or Yubuin?
「ゆふいん」は、どちらの表記が正しいのですか。
Both spellings exist in Japanese. The area had two towns, one written with the character for hot water and one with the mountain's name, and they merged. Today the station and the spring are usually written with the mountain's character.
日本語では二つの書き方があります。「湯」の字の町と、山の名の「由布」の字の町があって合併しました。いま駅や温泉の表記はおおむね「由布院」です。
QWhat is a sand bath?
砂湯とは何ですか。
You lie in a shallow trench on the beach or indoors and an attendant shovels hot sand over you, leaving your head out. The heat comes from the spring water under the sand. Ten minutes is usually enough.
浜辺か屋内の浅い溝に横になり、係の人が熱い砂をかけてくれます。顔だけ出します。熱は砂の下の温泉です。たいてい10分で十分です。

別府の源泉数はおよそ2800で日本一、湧出量も毎分8万リットルを超えて日本一とされる。湯温の高い源泉が多く、90度から100度近いものも珍しくない。「地獄」とは千年以上前から噴き出してきた高温の噴気孔や熱泥の湧き口を指し、海地獄・血の池地獄など七つを巡るのが地獄めぐりである。湯布院は、由布院町と湯布院町という別々の自治体があり、1970年の合併で湯布院町となった歴史から、いまも二通りの表記が残っている。2005年に合併して由布市となった。
