Beppu and Yufuin are hot spring towns: Beppu, Japan's largest, and Yufuin, a quieter one in the hills behind it.
Beppu, on the east coast of Kyushu, has more hot spring sources than anywhere else in Japan — around two thousand eight hundred — and steam rises from drains and rooftops all over town. Some springs are near boiling and are not for bathing; they are looked at instead. Yufuin, half an hour inland, is smaller, greener and built around small inns and galleries.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Beppu is the largest hot spring town in Japan by a wide margin. It has around two thousand eight hundred sources, roughly a tenth of all the sources in the country, and more than eighty thousand liters a minute come out of the ground.
You notice it before you arrive: steam rising between houses all over the hillside. Some of the springs are close to boiling, so they cannot be bathed in, and those became a sightseeing circuit called the hells, seven pools of different colors that you walk around and look at.
There are also sand baths where an attendant buries you in hot volcanic sand up to the neck. Half an hour inland is Yufuin, which is the opposite in feel: a small town under a twin-peaked mountain, with footbaths, small inns and craft shops. People often do both in one trip, one loud and one quiet.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QCan you bathe in the hells?
ANo. Those pools are near boiling and are for looking at. But some of the sites have footbaths fed by cooled water from the same source, and ordinary bath houses are everywhere in the town.
QWhy is Yufuin written two different ways?
AIn 1955 the town of Yufuin, written with the mountain's characters, merged with the village of Yunohira, and the new town took the character for hot water from Yunohira. The station and the spring area are still usually written the old way.
QWhat is a sand bath?
AYou lie in a shallow trench on the beach or indoors and an attendant shovels hot sand over you, leaving your head out. The heat comes from the spring water under the sand. Ten minutes is usually enough.

Background
