Arima Onsen is a small hot spring town in the hills of northern Kobe. It has two very different kinds of water: kinsen, or "gold water," which is brown, salty and full of iron, and ginsen, or "silver water," which is clear. An emperor's stay here is recorded in a history book from the 700s, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi loved the place. That long story is a big part of its appeal.

Arima Onsen sits in the hills on the north side of Kobe, and it is often counted among Japan's oldest hot springs. The Nihon Shoki, a history of Japan completed in 720, says that Emperor Jomei stayed here for nearly three months in 631.
Later, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the warlord who unified Japan, came here to bathe and even had a bathhouse palace built. What surprises most first-time visitors is the color of the water. The kinsen, or gold spring, comes out clear but turns reddish brown when its iron meets the air, and it is saltier than seawater.
The ginsen, or silver spring, is clear. The town is small, with narrow lanes, so it feels very different from a big resort. I think it's worth trying both waters and comparing how your skin feels.
QWhy is the water brown? Is it dirty?
Not at all. The water is rich in iron, and the iron turns reddish brown when it meets the air, just like rust. It can stain white towels, so bring one you don't mind getting stained.
QWhat's the difference between gold water and silver water?
Kinsen, the gold water, is brown, very salty, and full of iron. Ginsen, the silver water, is clear, and there are two types: one with carbon dioxide and one with a small amount of radon.
QIs it really the oldest hot spring in Japan?
It's one of the oldest on record, but a few other places, like Dogo in Ehime, make the same kind of claim. It's safer to call it one of Japan's three oldest hot springs, as people often do.
MYTHThe brown water at Arima is colored with added minerals or dye.
FACTNothing is added. The water comes out of the ground almost clear and turns brown on its own as its iron reacts with the air.
