Ginzan Onsen is a small hot spring town in Yamagata, in northern Japan. The name means "silver mine," because there was a large silver mine nearby in the early 1600s. Many people think the buildings are hundreds of years old, but that's not quite right.
A big flood in 1913 destroyed much of the old town, and most of the wooden inns you see today were rebuilt from the mid-1920s into the early 1930s, in a style that mixes Japanese and Western design.
The town became famous across Japan after it appeared in a popular TV drama in 1983. In winter, the snow, the gas lamps, and the steam from the baths make it look like an old postcard. I think it shows how a small town can keep its past alive.

That's a popular story online, but Studio Ghibli hasn't confirmed it. Several hot spring towns in Japan and abroad are called "the model," so it's safer to say it has a similar feel.

Why is it so famous if it's so small?
