英語で通じない和製英語55選|外国人にどう説明するか英語つき
マンションは「豪邸」ではなく、コンセントは「同意」とは関係ありません。英語のように聞こえて英語では通じない和製英語は、外国人に「それ、どういう意味?」と聞かれやすく、日本人が英語で話すときにもつまずきやすい言葉です。このページでは、日本語での意味と英語で本当に言うときの言い方を並べ、英語が由来でない外来語(ドイツ語・オランダ語など)も注記しました。
📝 教える前に知っておきたいこと
- カタカナ語が英語でも通じると思い込まないこと。英語っぽく聞こえる言葉は、海外で使う前に確かめましょう。
- 和製英語の多くは、日本語としてはまったく普通の言葉です。日本の中では間違いではなく、英語として使ったときにだけ通じなくなる、と説明すると伝わります。
- 英語ではなく別の言語から来たカタカナ語もあります。アルバイトはドイツ語、ランドセルはオランダ語なので、もともと英語ではありません。
- 英語の言葉がわからないときは、説明しましょう。「壁に差し込むところ(the thing you plug into the wall)」のほうが、「コンセント」と言うよりずっと伝わります。
- 外国人の友だちには、日本人が変な英語を使ったらカタカナ語を思い浮かべてみて、と伝えましょう。会話に出てくる「mansion」は、ほぼ必ずマンション(集合住宅)のことです。

Probably the most famous false friend. In English, a mansion is a huge, rich house. A Japanese manshon is an ordinary apartment or condo in a concrete building; a smaller wooden building is an apato. Say apartment or condo.
