In Japan the washing machine is standard in every home, but the clothes dryer is not, because most people hang laundry to dry on a balcony or veranda. That habit works fine most of the year, but it fails during the June rainy season, in the middle of winter, and for anything too bulky to hang: futons, winter coats, stuffed animals.
Coin laundries exist mainly to solve that problem rather than to replace a home washer entirely. The big draw is the industrial-sized dryer, powerful enough to fluff a futon in under an hour, something no home machine can do.
Most locations are unattended, open around the clock, and paid for by inserting coins or tapping a card into a machine sized for the load. Sneaker-only courses, with a gentle drum and quiet drying, have become common enough that some people go only for their shoes.
