Life Story

Tchaikovsky was born in 1840 in Votkinsk, a town in the Ural region of Russia, where his father was a mining engineer. He started piano lessons at five and loved music, but his parents planned for him to become a civil servant. At ten he entered the School of Jurisprudence in Saint Petersburg, and at fourteen he lost his beloved mother to cholera. This loss is said to have stayed with him for the rest of his life.

After graduating, he worked at the Ministry of Justice, but he could not give up music. In 1862 he enrolled at the newly opened Saint Petersburg Conservatory. From 1866 he taught at the Moscow Conservatory while pouring his energy into composing. He created melody after unforgettable melody in works such as Piano Concerto No. 1 (1875), the ballet Swan Lake (first staged in 1877), and later The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker.

In 1877 a wealthy widow, Nadezhda von Meck, offered to support him, and she sent him money for thirteen years. They exchanged more than a thousand letters but kept their promise never to meet in person. That same year Tchaikovsky also married, but the marriage failed and the couple separated within weeks. Out of this painful time came his Fourth Symphony and the opera Eugene Onegin.

In his later years he became world-famous, and in 1891 he conducted at the opening festival of Carnegie Hall in New York. In October 1893 he conducted the premiere of his Sixth Symphony, the Pathétique. Nine days later he died suddenly in Saint Petersburg, aged 53. The recorded cause of death was cholera. Later writers proposed theories of suicide, but no firm evidence supports them.

Tchaikovsky was born in Russia in 1840. At first, he worked for the government. But he loved music too much! He went to music school at twenty-two. Later, he wrote Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. People all over the world love his ballets.

In 1891 in Paris, Tchaikovsky discovered the celesta, a new instrument with a pure, bell-like sound. He wrote to his publisher asking him to order one in secret, so that other Russian composers would not use it first. That is how the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker got its magical sound.

When Tchaikovsky finished his Piano Concerto No. 1, he played it for the pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, whom he respected. Rubinstein harshly called it unplayable and worthless. Tchaikovsky refused to change it, and in 1875 the German pianist Hans von Bülow gave the premiere in Boston, USA, with great success.

Swan Lake is now one of the world's most famous ballets, but reactions to its 1877 Moscow premiere were mixed. Even so, the original production received 41 performances by 1883, so it was not simply a complete failure. After Tchaikovsky's death, the landmark 1895 revival by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov established the ballet's lasting fame.

The 1812 Overture celebrates the defeat of Napoleon's invasion of Russia, and the score actually includes cannon fire. Real cannons are sometimes used at outdoor concerts. Yet Tchaikovsky himself wrote in a letter that the piece was very loud and noisy and written without much love.

Tchaikovsky and Madame von Meck kept their promise not to meet for thirteen years, but they did see each other by accident. On one such occasion, their carriages passed each other near her estate, and they went on their way without a word.

In June 1893, Tchaikovsky received an honorary doctorate in music from the University of Cambridge in England. Other composers honored at the same ceremony included Camille Saint-Saëns of France and Max Bruch of Germany. It was a joyful moment, just a few months before his death.
