The Story

The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy comes from Act 2 of Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker. On Christmas night, a girl named Clara travels with the Nutcracker Prince to the Land of Sweets. There, the Sugar Plum Fairy, who rules the land, dances to the bell-like sound of the celesta.

The story is based on a tale by the German writer E. T. A. Hoffmann, retold by the French writer Alexandre Dumas. In 1891, on his way to America, Tchaikovsky stopped in Paris and discovered the celesta, a newly invented instrument. When you press a key, a hammer strikes a metal bar and makes a bell-like sound.

The Nutcracker was premiered in December 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, on the same evening as his opera Iolanta. The first reviews were mixed, but later it became a Christmas favorite. Today, many ballet companies around the world perform it during the Christmas season.

This dance is from a ballet called The Nutcracker. A girl goes to a land of sweets. There, a fairy dances. You can hear a magic sound like little bells. It comes from the celesta, an instrument that was new at that time.

Tchaikovsky wrote to his publisher Jurgenson, asking him to get a celesta from Paris. He added that it should be shown to no one, because he feared that Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov might use its special sound before he could.

In English she is the Sugar Plum Fairy, and in the original French she is the 'Dragée Fairy'. A dragée is a sweet with a hard sugar coating, often around an almond. In Japan, the name was translated using konpeito, another kind of sugar candy.

While the celesta sparkles, the bass clarinet answers with low notes that slide downward. High bells and a deep woodwind voice: this surprising pair creates a magical, slightly mysterious mood.

While writing it, Tchaikovsky reportedly wrote in a letter that The Nutcracker was far weaker than The Sleeping Beauty. Yet today it is one of the most performed ballets in the world. He was completely wrong!
