The Harmonious Blacksmith' is the nickname of the 'Air and Variations', the last movement of Handel's Harpsichord Suite No. 5 in E major. A simple, friendly melody (the air) comes first, followed by five variations. As the variations go on, the notes get faster and faster, and at the end the fingers race brilliantly across the keys.
The suite is part of a set of eight suites published in London in 1720. In the preface, Handel explained that he had been 'obliged to publish' some of these pieces because incorrect copies were going around. So it was partly a fight against pirate editions. In London at that time, popular composers' works were often printed without permission.
The name 'The Harmonious Blacksmith' first appeared in the early 19th century, long after Handel's death. A story spread that Handel got the idea while sheltering from the rain in a blacksmith's shop and hearing the hammer, but there is no proof it is true. Another theory says a music seller in Bath, who had once trained as a blacksmith, published it under his own nickname. Today it is still popular with piano students.
This is a happy little piece with a simple tune and five variations. The music grows busier and more brilliant. Its name means 'the harmonious blacksmith.' But Handel did not give it this name! The nickname appeared about 100 years later.

A story says Handel sheltered from the rain in a blacksmith's shop in Edgware, near London, and got the idea from the hammering or the blacksmith's singing. This story spread from around 1835, but there is no proof. The music had been published long before, in 1720.
The legend became so popular that in 1868 a gravestone was put up in Whitchurch for William Powell, the man said to be the blacksmith, and it calls him 'the Harmonious Blacksmith'. But Powell was actually the parish clerk, not a blacksmith.
Grove's Dictionary of Music in the 19th century said that William Lintern, a music seller in Bath who had been a blacksmith's apprentice, published the piece under his own nickname, and called this story 'probably true'. However, no copy of his edition has ever been found.
Handel published this set because incorrect, unauthorized copies were going around. At a time when composers' rights were poorly protected, printing a correct edition yourself was the best defense. Handel was a sharp businessman as well as a composer.
