The Story

The French Suites are six suites for keyboard by Bach. Each is a set of dance pieces such as the allemande, courante, sarabande and gigue. No. 5 in G major is one of the brightest and friendliest of the six. It has seven movements: Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gavotte, Bourrée, Loure and Gigue.

The first five suites were written into the music notebook Bach began in 1722 for Anna Magdalena Bach. Anna Magdalena, a fine singer, had become Bach's second wife the year before, in 1721. These suites were probably meant for music at home and for practice by students and the children.

The name 'French Suites' was not given by Bach, and nobody knows exactly why they came to be called that. The Gavotte from No. 5 is especially famous and a favorite of piano students. The final Gigue is full of Bach's cleverness. Its theme chases itself like a fugue, and in the second half the theme appears upside down.

This is a set of dance music for the keyboard. It is bright and happy. Bach wrote it in a notebook for his wife. The Gavotte is very famous. Many piano students play it.

Surprising Facts

Bach simply called these 'suites for the clavier'. The name 'French Suites' came into use during the 18th century, but nobody knows why. Some say it is because of their light French style, yet some of them contain an Italian-style courante.

There are two music notebooks for Anna Magdalena Bach, from 1722 and 1725. The 1722 notebook contains early versions of the French Suites, but some pieces survive only in part. This is probably because some of its pages were lost.

The loure is a French dance in a slow six-beat meter, with a slightly skipping rhythm. The word 'loure' is also said to have been the name of a kind of bagpipe from Normandy in France. In this suite, it feels like a peaceful country scene.

The gavotte is a dance in two beats, and it is known for starting in the middle of a bar. The Gavotte in No. 5 also begins with a bounce, and its melody is easy to remember. It came from French country dancing and was popular at the court of Louis XIV.
