The Inventions are a set of 15 short keyboard pieces in two voices, one for each hand. Bach put them together while he was working at the court in Köthen, and he made a clean copy in 1723. No. 1 in C major is the first piece. A short melody that climbs up the scale is passed between the right hand and the left hand, and it builds the whole piece.
On the title page of the clean copy, Bach wrote down his goals. Students should learn to play two voices clearly, find good musical ideas, or 'inventions', and develop them well. Above all, they should learn a singing style of playing and get a taste of composition. So this collection was a textbook for learning to play and to compose at the same time.
Early versions of these pieces also appear, under the name 'Praeambulum', in the notebook Bach started in 1720 for his eldest son. The 15 pieces are arranged in order of key: C major, C minor, D major, and so on. Today they are used in piano lessons all over the world, and many great pianists, such as Glenn Gould, have recorded them.
This is a short piece for the piano. It has only two lines of music, one for each hand. A small idea of seven notes starts the piece. The two hands pass the idea back and forth. Bach wrote it to teach young players.

The title page has a long, careful description: 'Honest instruction, by which lovers of the keyboard, especially those eager to learn, are shown a clear way.' At the end, Bach signed himself as Kapellmeister to the Prince of Anhalt-Köthen and added the year 1723. It reads almost like an advertisement for a textbook.
In the 1723 clean copy, Bach later added triplets (three notes in one beat) to some notes of No. 1. This other version is called BWV 772a. Perhaps Bach wanted to show his students how the same piece could be decorated.
The short theme of No. 1 also appears upside down during the piece. A melody that went up now goes down. Making a whole piece by copying one idea, turning it over and linking it together is what Bach meant by 'developing' an idea.
'Invention' is the same word as the English invention, meaning a discovery or a bright idea. At that time, it could also mean the musical idea that a piece grows from. In the early notebook, these pieces were called 'Praeambulum', but Bach gave them their present name in the clean copy.
