June: Barcarolle is the sixth piece in Tchaikovsky's piano collection The Seasons. The set has twelve pieces, one for each month, showing scenes and events of the year. A barcarolle was first a song of the gondoliers in Venice, Italy, and it has a gentle rocking rhythm, like a boat on the waves.
The set was written for Nikolai Bernard, editor of the St Petersburg music magazine Nouvellist, and one piece was printed each month during 1876. Each piece comes with lines by a Russian poet. June has a poem by Pleshcheyev that means: 'Let us go to the shore, where the waves will kiss our feet, and the stars will shine above us with mysterious sadness.'
It begins with a sad melody in G minor. In the middle, it moves to a major key and becomes a little faster and brighter. Then the sad melody returns and slowly fades away. It is one of the most popular pieces in The Seasons. Pianists often play it at recitals, and it has been arranged for orchestra, guitar, and more.
This is a piano piece about June. It is like a boat song. The music moves gently, like small waves. The melody is a little sad and very beautiful. It first came out in a music magazine!

The Seasons came out as a year-long series in the magazine Nouvellist. Each month, readers got the music for the new month and played it on their pianos at home. Before recordings existed, magazines with sheet music were an important way to discover new music.
The titles and poems are said to have been chosen by the editor, Bernard, not by Tchaikovsky. That means Tchaikovsky wrote music to fit themes given to him. Even so, every piece matches its poem beautifully.
The barcarolle comes from the songs of Venetian gondoliers, with a rocking rhythm like rowing. Many composers wrote famous barcarolles, including Mendelssohn's Venetian Boat Songs, Chopin's Barcarolle, and the Barcarolle from Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann.
The Seasons has other favorites too. One of the best known is November, 'Troika', which shows a sleigh pulled by three horses racing through the snow. The great Russian pianist Rachmaninoff played 'Troika' and made a recording of it.
