The Story

Tchaikovsky finished his Symphony No. 5 in the summer of 1888. At the start, the clarinets play a dark, low theme, and this theme appears in all four movements in different forms. From the heavy opening, the music moves to a beautiful second movement sung by the horn and an elegant waltz in the third. In the finale, the theme is reborn as a bright, grand march.

In his notebook, when he began the work, Tchaikovsky wrote of "total submission before fate." That is why the theme is sometimes called the "fate motif." But most of his other notes were not used, so no one knows how closely the music follows a story. It was his first numbered symphony in about ten years, after No. 4.

It was first performed on 17 November 1888 in St. Petersburg, with Tchaikovsky conducting. The audience liked it, but he lost confidence and wrote to von Meck, "I am convinced that this symphony is not a success." Later, as it was played in many places, its reputation grew, and today it is one of his most popular symphonies.

This symphony has one special tune. At first, the tune is dark and sad. It comes back in every part of the symphony. At the end, it becomes a happy, strong march. The music goes from dark to light!

After the premiere, Tchaikovsky wrote to von Meck that there was something unpleasant and false about this symphony, and that he was sure it was a failure. Today it is hugely popular, but its own composer was its harshest critic.

The long melody that the horn sings alone at the start of the second movement is a famous solo, often used in orchestra auditions. Playing it softly and with deep feeling is very difficult, so it really shows a horn player's skill.

In the autumn of 1941, during World War II, the radio orchestra in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), which was surrounded by the German army, performed this symphony. It was broadcast live to Britain, and it is said the orchestra kept playing even as bombs fell nearby.

The melody of the second movement was later given English words and became a pop song called "Moon Love," which Frank Sinatra also recorded. Great classical melodies live on in many forms across the years.
