Capriccio Italien is an orchestral piece that Tchaikovsky based on his memories of a trip to Italy. A capriccio is a free, whimsical piece that does not follow a strict form. It opens with a trumpet call, and then a sad tune, bright songs and lively dances appear one after another. It ends with a dance at breakneck speed.
From late 1879 to early 1880, Tchaikovsky stayed in Rome with his brother Modest, and he also saw the busy Carnival season. Next to their hotel was a cavalry barracks, and every evening a bugle call sounded from it. That call became the opening of the piece. The other tunes are also based on Italian folk songs, some from collections and some heard in the streets.
Tchaikovsky made sketches in Rome and finished the orchestral score in Russia that spring. The first performance took place in Moscow in December 1880, conducted by Nikolai Rubinstein. Tchaikovsky wanted to write something like Glinka's pieces based on Spanish music. Today it is a popular, sunny concert piece played all over the world.
Tchaikovsky was from Russia. One winter, he stayed in Rome, Italy. Every evening, he heard a trumpet from the soldiers next to his hotel. He put that sound at the start of this piece! The music is full of Italian songs and dances.

The trumpet call at the start is not a tune Tchaikovsky made up. It is based on the bugle call he heard every evening from a cavalry barracks next to his hotel in Rome. A sound he heard daily on his trip became the opening of a famous piece.
In 1877, Tchaikovsky's marriage failed and he was deeply hurt. For years after that, he traveled around Europe. His travels were supported by Nadezhda von Meck, a rich patron he knew only through letters. Behind the brightness of this piece lies that difficult time.
The fast dance near the end is a tarantella, a dance from southern Italy. There is an old legend that people bitten by a tarantula danced it nonstop to get rid of the poison. The music gets faster and faster, and the whole orchestra ends in a wild finish.
Tchaikovsky wanted to write an Italian piece like the Spanish overtures by Glinka, the 'father of Russian music', who wrote them after a trip to Spain. So this piece belongs to a tradition of Russian composers painting colorful pictures of foreign folk music.
