The Dance of the Reed Flutes is one of the dances in the Land of Sweets in Act 2 of The Nutcracker. Its French title is 'Danse des mirlitons'. A mirliton is a toy pipe with a thin skin that buzzes when you hum into it, a bit like a kazoo. The main attraction is the cheerful, elegant tune played by three flutes together.
The piece has three parts. At the beginning and end, the flutes sing lightly over plucked strings, called pizzicato. In the middle, the mood suddenly changes to a minor key, and trumpets and other brass play a strong melody. Then the bright flute tune comes back.
This piece is also in the suite first played in March 1892. Who dances it depends on the production. In George Balanchine's version for New York City Ballet, for example, it is the dance of Marzipan, an almond sweet. In Disney's 1940 film Fantasia, it became a beautiful scene of flower petals dancing like ballerinas on the water.
In this dance, three flutes play a happy tune together. The French title refers to a toy pipe. In the middle, the music changes. The trumpets play loud and strong! Then the happy flutes come back.

The Japanese title means 'reed flute dance', but the French word mirliton means a toy pipe with a thin skin over one end that buzzes when you hum into it. It is close to what we now call a kazoo. The way a title is translated can change the instrument people imagine.
It is unusual for three flutes to play the main tune together in an orchestral piece. They breathe together and make chords, so it sounds like a bright choir of pipes. For flute players, it is also a real test of playing in perfect time with others.
The role in this dance changes from production to production. In Balanchine's version, it is the dance of Marzipan, an almond sweet. In Disney's Fantasia (1940), flower petals fall on the water and spin like skirts. Many different worlds have been born from the same music.
After the sweet flute tune, the middle part turns to a minor key and the trumpets ring out strongly. For a moment, the elegant dance becomes bold. This surprise makes the flute tune sound even brighter when it returns at the end.
