The Story

The Chinese Dance is one of the numbers in Act 2 of The Nutcracker, when dances representing sweets and drinks from many lands are performed one after another in the Land of Sweets. In the ballet, it is called 'Tea', because China is the home of tea. It lasts only about a minute, one of the shortest numbers in the suite.

The music is very simple. Low bassoons repeat the same two notes, and above them, flutes and a piccolo play a light, hopping tune very high up. The strings accompany the tune with pizzicato, plucking the strings with their fingers. The contrast between the very high and very low sounds makes it funny and charming.

In Disney's 1940 film Fantasia, little mushrooms dance to this music, which brought it to a wide film audience. In recent years, however, many ballet companies have changed old costumes and dance moves that showed stereotypes of Chinese people. The music stays the same, but the dancing is being rethought.

This is a very short dance. It is only about one minute long! In the ballet, its name is 'Tea'. A small flute plays high and happy notes. Low bassoons go 'bom, bom' under it.

Listening Guide

In the Land of Sweets, three of the national dances are named after a drink or treat. The Chinese Dance is 'Tea', the Arabian Dance is 'Coffee', and the Spanish Dance is 'Chocolate'. Each one shows off a treat linked to a different land.

In Disney's Fantasia (1940), mushrooms with round caps dance in a circle to this music. The smallest mushroom keeps falling behind the others, which makes the scene funny and charming.

The melody is played by flutes and the piccolo, a small flute that plays even higher. The highest sounds of the orchestra and the low bassoons play at the same time, as if a high voice and a low voice were telling jokes to each other.

In old productions, the costumes and moves sometimes showed stereotypes of Chinese people. Since the late 2010s, more and more ballet companies have dropped those images and made new dances and costumes. They want everyone to enjoy this great music comfortably.
