The Story

The Dance of the Little Swans is danced in Act 2 of Swan Lake, in the scene by the lake on a moonlit night. Four ballerinas cross their arms in front and hold hands, standing in a line. They move their feet and heads in perfect time. With its light, bouncy rhythm and slightly funny melody, it is one of the most popular scenes in the whole ballet.

The music is simple. Bassoons play short, detached notes, 'ta-ta-ta-ta', as an accompaniment, while two oboes play the melody above them. It is in a minor key, yet it somehow sounds cute and light. The quick little rhythm of the music matches the dancers' tiny steps perfectly.

Swan Lake was Tchaikovsky's first ballet. It was first performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow in 1877, but it was not a great success. It became popular only after his death, when Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov made new choreography in St. Petersburg in 1895. The famous dance of the four little swans that we know today was created by Ivanov.

Four dancers hold hands in a line. They are little swans. They move their feet and heads at the same time. If one dancer makes a mistake, everyone can see it! The music is short and bouncy.4人の踊り手が、横一列で手をつなぎます。

Surprising Facts

The four ballerinas cross their arms and hold hands almost until the very end. Without using their hands, all four must match tiny steps and head turns perfectly. It looks cute, but it is known as a very difficult dance.

Swan Lake was not well received at its 1877 premiere in Moscow. It is said that the choreography and staging did not match the music. Tchaikovsky died in 1893 without ever seeing the ballet become a huge hit.

After Tchaikovsky died, the lake scene (Act 2) with Ivanov's choreography was performed at a memorial concert in 1894. It was a success, and in 1895 Petipa and Ivanov created a new full production. It became the basis of the Swan Lake we see today, and the dance of the four little swans was born then, too.

The oboes play the melody, but the 'tiptoe' feeling comes from the short, detached notes of the bassoons. Even though they are low instruments, they tap out the rhythm lightly, like tiny footsteps. If you listen to the bassoons, you can almost see the dancers' steps.
