バレエ「くるみ割り人形」より アラビアの踊り

「アラビアの踊り」は、バレエ「くるみ割り人形」の第2幕、お菓子の国の踊りの1つです。バレエの中での名前は「コーヒー」。コーヒーがアラビア半島から世界に広まったことにちなんでいます。ゆっくりとしたテンポで、低い音が同じリズムをくり返し、その上で木管楽器がゆらゆらとしたメロディーを歌う、神秘的な曲です。The Arabian Dance is one of the dances in the Land of Sweets in Act 2 of The Nutcracker. In the ballet, it is called 'Coffee', because coffee spread to the world from the Arabian Peninsula. It is a slow, mysterious piece: low instruments repeat the same rhythm, while woodwinds sing a swaying melody above them.

じつはこのメロディーは、ジョージア（グルジア）の子守歌がもとになっています。ジョージアはロシアの南、コーカサス地方の国です。チャイコフスキーは、弱音器（音を小さくやわらかくする道具）をつけた弦楽器、クラリネット、イングリッシュホルン、タンブリンなどを使って、暗く、夢のような雰囲気を作り出しました。In fact, the melody is based on a lullaby from Georgia, a country in the Caucasus, south of Russia. Tchaikovsky used muted strings, clarinets, the English horn and the tambourine to create a dark, dreamlike mood. A mute is a small tool that makes a string instrument sound softer.

この曲は、1892年3月に先に発表された組曲にも入っています。1940年のディズニー映画『ファンタジア』では、長いひれをベールのようにゆらしながら泳ぐ金魚の姿で描かれました。目がさえるはずの「コーヒー」の踊りが、子どもを眠らせる歌からできているという、ちょっとおもしろい組み合わせの名曲です。This piece is also part of the suite first played in March 1892. In Disney's 1940 film Fantasia, it shows a goldfish swimming slowly, waving its long fins like a veil. It is a fun combination: the dance of 'Coffee', a drink that wakes you up, is built from a song that puts children to sleep.
