Yumomi is a way of cooling hot spring water without adding cold water. People stand around the bath and churn the water with long wooden boards, singing a folk song to keep the rhythm. It comes from Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma, where the water comes out of the ground too hot to bathe in. Today, most visitors know it as a show performed in the center of town.

Yumomi is one of the most unusual hot spring traditions in Japan, and it belongs to Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma Prefecture. The water at Kusatsu comes out of the ground so hot that you can't get into it right away. The easy answer would be to add cold water, but that would thin out the spring water, which is the very thing people come to Kusatsu for.
So instead, people stand around the bath with long wooden boards and stir the water back and forth until it cools down. To keep everyone in rhythm, they sing Kusatsu-bushi, a folk song whose first line, "Kusatsu yoi toko," is known all over Japan. Yumomi was part of a traditional way of bathing called jikan-yu.
Bathers poured the cooled water over their heads dozens of times and then soaked up to their shoulders for about three minutes. Today, most visitors see yumomi as a show in front of Yubatake, the town's largest spring. I like it because it's a clever way of working with the water instead of changing it.
Why don't they just add cold water?
Adding water would dilute the spring water, and the water itself is what makes Kusatsu special. Stirring cools it down while keeping it as it came out of the ground.
How do the inns cool their water, then?
Water from Yubatake runs through long wooden channels, which cools it before it's sent to the inns. Yumomi survives mostly as a show and a piece of local tradition.
What's the song they sing?
It's Kusatsu-bushi, a local folk song. Singing together keeps everyone's boards moving in the same rhythm, so it's part of the work, not just entertainment.
