Ultraman is one of the most famous heroes in Japanese pop culture. The first series started on TBS on July 17th, 1966, and ran for 39 episodes. It was made by Tsuburaya Productions, a studio founded by Eiji Tsuburaya, the special effects director behind the original Godzilla movie. Ultraman comes from the M78 Nebula.
He merges with Hayata, a member of a team called the Science Patrol, and grows to about 40 meters tall to fight giant monsters. The famous rule is that he can only last about three minutes on Earth. When the color timer on his chest starts blinking, kids watching at home know he has to win fast.
The fights were filmed with actors in suits on miniature city sets, a style called tokusatsu. Since then, dozens of new Ultra heroes have appeared, and the series is still going. I think its secret is simple: big monsters, a clear hero, and a ticking clock.

Is Ultraman the same kind of thing as Power Rangers?

They're both Japanese tokusatsu, or live-action special effects shows, but they're different series. Ultraman is one giant hero, while Power Rangers is based on Japanese team-hero shows.

最初の『ウルトラマン』は1966年7月17日から1967年4月まで、TBS系で全39話が放送された。その1週間前の7月10日には、公開イベントの様子を収めた特別番組が放送され、この日は「ウルトラマンの日」とされている。デザインは、それまでの怪獣ものと違う「正義の巨人」として、銀と赤の体に仕上げられた。人が入る着ぐるみとミニチュアのセットで撮る手法は、映画『ゴジラ』から受け継いだ特撮の技術だ。その後もセブン、帰ってきたウルトラマン、タロウなどシリーズが続き、アジアをはじめ海外でも放送された。
