Tanabata, on July 7th, comes from a story about two lovers who are separated by the Milky Way and allowed to meet only one night a year. People write a wish on a narrow strip of colored paper and tie it to a bamboo branch. Schools, stations and shopping streets all put up bamboo, so by early July the whole town is covered in paper wishes.
七夕は7月7日。天の川で引き離された恋人同士が、年に一夜だけ会うことを許される物語に由来します。人々は細長い色紙に願い事を書き、笹の枝に結びます。学校も駅も商店街も笹を立てるので、7月初めには町じゅうが紙の願い事で覆われます。

Tanabata is celebrated on the seventh of July. The story behind it came from China long ago. A weaving girl and a cowherd fell in love and stopped doing their work, so they were separated by the Milky Way and allowed to meet only once a year, on this night.
Today, people write a wish on a strip of colored paper and tie it to a bamboo branch. You see them everywhere, at schools, at train stations, in front of shops. I like reading other people's strips.
Some wish for world peace, and right next to it a child has written that they want to be a cake shop owner. Very few of these wishes will come true, and everyone knows it. That is not really the point. Writing it down and hanging it where the wind can move it is the point.
七夕は7月7日に祝われます。その物語は、はるか昔に中国から伝わりました。機織りの娘と牛飼いの若者が恋に落ち、仕事をしなくなったため天の川で引き離され、年に一度この夜だけ会うことを許されました。
今日では、色のついた短冊に願いを書き、笹の枝に結びます。学校、駅、店先と、どこでも見かけます。私は人の短冊を読むのが好きです。
世界平和を願うものの隣に、ケーキ屋さんになりたいと子どもが書いていたりします。そのほとんどは叶いません。それはみんな分かっています。それでも、書いて、風に揺れる場所に吊るすこと自体に意味があるのです。

The story is a love story, but the day itself is not treated as a couples' event. It is mostly a children's and community festival about writing wishes.
物語は恋物語ですが、当日は恋人の日とは扱われません。願い事を書く、子どもと地域の行事です。
QWhy bamboo?
どうして竹なのですか。
Bamboo grows fast and straight, and its leaves rustle in the smallest wind, so it was thought to carry messages upward. It is also easy to get and easy to burn or float away afterward.
竹はまっすぐ早く育ち、わずかな風でも葉が鳴るため、願いを天に届けると考えられました。手に入りやすく、後で燃やしたり流したりしやすいこともあります。

いつも7月7日なのですか。
In most of Japan, yes. But some areas, most famously Sendai, hold it in August to match the old lunar calendar, when the rainy season is over and you can actually see the stars.
多くの地域では7月7日ですが、仙台など旧暦に合わせて8月に行う地域もあります。そのころは梅雨が明けていて、実際に星が見えるからです。

七夕の物語のもとは中国の牛郎織女の伝説で、奈良時代に日本へ伝わり、日本古来の「棚機（たなばた）」という機織りの神事と結びついた。「七夕」と書いて「たなばた」と読むのはこのためで、漢字と読みが対応していない。短冊の五色（青・赤・黄・白・黒または紫）は中国の五行思想に由来する。ちなみに7月7日は梅雨の真っ最中で、東京で天の川が見える確率は高くない。旧暦の七夕（8月中〜下旬にあたる）に行う地域があるのは、そのほうが晴れて星が見えるからでもある。仙台七夕まつりは毎年200万人規模を集める。
