Renrakucho means "contact notebook." Many nursery schools and elementary schools in Japan use one to share daily information between teachers and parents. Children copy down the next day's homework and things to bring, and parents write notes, like saying the child has a cold or needs to leave early. In recent years, more schools are moving these messages to apps.

If you have a child in a Japanese school, one of the first things you'll get is a renrakucho, or contact notebook. It travels in the child's school bag between home and school almost every day. At elementary school, children write down what the teacher says at the end of the day, like tomorrow's homework, things to bring, or a change in the schedule.
Parents read it at night, and if they need to tell the teacher something, they write it in the notebook. For example, "She has a slight cold, so please let her skip swimming today." The teacher reads it, replies, and often adds a stamp or a short comment.
At nursery schools, the notebook is even more detailed, with notes on meals, naps, and the child's mood. This daily habit takes time, but it helps teachers and parents notice small changes in a child. Many schools are now switching to apps. Still, I think a handwritten note from a teacher feels special.

Do I have to write something every day?
Usually not at elementary school. You read it and write only when you need to tell the teacher something. Some schools ask parents to sign or stamp it each day, so check what your school expects.
Can I just email the teacher instead?
It depends on the school. Many schools prefer the notebook, a phone call to the school office, or the school's own app, so ask at the start of the year.
