In Japan, a circle, called maru, means "correct" or "yes," and an X, called batsu, means "wrong" or "no." Teachers circle right answers on tests, and a check mark is often used for wrong ones, which surprises many students from abroad. People even make a circle or an X with their arms to say yes or no without words.

When students from abroad get their first test back in a Japanese school, they're often confused. The page is covered in red circles, and they think they did badly. In fact, a circle, or maru, means the answer is right. An X, or batsu, means it's wrong, and many teachers also use a check mark for wrong answers, which is the opposite of what students in many other countries expect.
When a student does very well, a younger child might even get a hanamaru, a circle drawn like a flower. The same symbols appear everywhere in daily life. On forms, you circle the option that applies. On TV quiz shows, people run to the circle side or the X side.
Store staff may cross their arms in an X to tell you something isn't possible, and a friend might hold their arms over their head in a big circle to say "OK." Even game controllers used this rule: on older PlayStation systems in Japan, the circle button meant "yes." I think it's worth knowing, because a simple mark can mean the opposite in another country.
So is a check mark always wrong in Japan?
Not always. On tests it often marks a wrong answer, but on lists and forms it can just mean "done" or "selected," like in other countries. Look at how the teacher uses it.
What is a triangle for?
A triangle, or sankaku, means "partly right" or "so-so." On a test, you might get some of the points for that answer.
Why do people make an X with their arms?
It's a quick, clear way to say "no" or "not allowed" without words, for example when a restaurant is full. It isn't rude in Japan, just direct.
MYTHA paper covered in red circles means you made a lot of mistakes.
FACTIn Japan, it's the opposite. Red circles mean right answers, so a page full of them is good news.
