Mount Aso is not what people picture when they hear volcano. It is a caldera, a collapsed basin about eighteen kilometers east to west and twenty-five north to south, formed by four enormous eruptions, the last around ninety thousand years ago. The extraordinary part is that people live in it.
Around fifty thousand of them, with towns, train lines, schools and rice fields inside the rim, which is rare anywhere in the world. In the middle stand the central cones, and one of them, Nakadake, is genuinely active: it steams constantly, has a crater lake that changes color, and erupts often enough that access is controlled by an alert level.
Around it are grasslands kept open for over a thousand years by cutting and by controlled burning every spring, which is why the slopes look like pasture rather than forest. Check the alert level before you go.
阿蘇山は、火山と聞いて思い浮かべる形をしていません。カルデラ、つまり陥没した盆地で、東西およそ18キロ、南北25キロ。四度の巨大な噴火でできたもので、最後は9万年ほど前とされます。

The caldera floor is farmland far from the active vent, and the risk is managed with monitoring and alert levels. People have farmed here for centuries; the volcanic soil is part of why the land is good.

When the alert level is low, yes, there is a viewpoint at the rim of Nakadake. When the level rises, the area closes, and that happens several times in a typical decade.

Because people keep them that way. The grassland has been maintained for over a thousand years by cutting grass for fodder and thatch and by burning the slopes each spring, which stops trees taking hold.
