Matsumotojo, or Matsumoto Castle, is a castle in the city of Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture. Its main keep was built at the end of the 1500s and has survived to this day, which is rare in Japan. The black walls stand out against the mountains of the Northern Alps behind it. Its keep is one of only five castle keeps in Japan that are National Treasures.

If you know Himeji Castle, the famous white castle, then Matsumoto Castle in Nagano is a good one to compare it with, because it is black. Its main keep was built around the 1590s, and unlike many Japanese castles, it was never burned down or rebuilt in concrete. Only twelve castles in Japan still have their original keeps, and Matsumoto is one of them.
It is also one of five castles whose keeps are National Treasures. Another unusual thing is that it stands on flat ground, not on a hill, so a wide moat was used for defense. Inside, the steep wooden stairs and small windows for guns remind you that it was built for war.
But one part, a turret for moon viewing, was added later, in the peaceful Edo period. In the early Meiji era, the castle was sold and could have been torn down, but local people worked to save it. I like it because it shows both sides of castle life, war and peace.
