Magewappa is a box made by bending wood. A craftsperson takes a thin sheet of cedar, softens it in hot water, and bends it around a form until it becomes a ring. The overlapping ends are sewn together with strips of cherry bark, and then a bottom is fitted in.
The best-known type comes from Odate in Akita Prefecture, where it was officially designated a traditional craft by the national government in 1980. People love it as a lunch box. Plastic boxes trap steam, but wood absorbs the extra moisture, so the rice doesn't get soggy even hours later.
The catch is that it needs a little care. Many uncoated boxes shouldn't be soaked or put in a dishwasher. I think that small effort is part of why people treat them as something to keep for years.

薄い板を曲げて作る「曲げ物」は日本各地にあり、曲げわっぱはその一つ。秋田県大館市の「大館曲げわっぱ」は1980年に国の伝統的工芸品に指定された。江戸時代に大館の領主が、豊富な秋田杉を使った曲げ物づくりを下級武士の内職として勧めたと伝えられる。かつては樹齢200年を超える天然の秋田杉が使われていたが、天然杉の伐採は終わり、いまは植林された杉が主な材料になっている。塗装しない白木のものと、ウレタンや漆で塗ったものがあり、手入れの仕方が違う。
