Is a light novel a manga?
ライトノベルは漫画なのですか。
No. It is a real novel, written in prose, and most pages are only text. The anime-style pictures on the cover and inside make it look close to manga, but you read it like a book.
いいえ。文章で書かれた本物の小説で、ほとんどのページは文字だけです。表紙や中のアニメ風の絵のせいで漫画に近く見えますが、読み方は普通の本と同じです。
Where does the name come from?
この名前はどこから来たのですか。
It is a Japanese coinage made from English words. The term is said to have started around 1990 among fans on an online forum, and it spread from there. English-speaking fans now use "light novel" too.
英語の単語を組み合わせた和製英語です。1990年ごろ、パソコン通信のフォーラムでファンが使い始めたのが始まりとされ、そこから広まりました。今では英語圏のファンも light novel と呼んでいます。
Why are the titles so long?
なぜ題名がこんなに長いのですか。
On busy websites and crowded bookstore shelves, a long title can explain the whole setup at a glance. It started as a way to stand out and became a trend of its own. Not every light novel has one, though.
作品があふれる投稿サイトや書店の棚では、長い題名なら設定をひと目で伝えられるからです。目立つための工夫が、それ自体ひとつの流行になりました。ただし、すべてのライトノベルの題名が長いわけではありません。
