Komodaru are sake barrels wrapped in straw matting called komo, usually printed with the brewery's name and logo. Many shrines display rows of them as offerings, because sake has long been offered to the kami, or Shinto gods. The barrels on display are often empty and serve as decorations. Full ones are also opened with wooden mallets at weddings and celebrations.

If you visit a large shrine in Japan, you may see a wall of colorful barrels stacked up beside the path. These are komodaru, sake barrels wrapped in straw matting and printed with the names of breweries. In Shinto, sake is one of the most important offerings to the kami, or gods.
Sake offered at a shrine is called omiki, and after a festival, the priests and worshippers may share it. Breweries offer barrels to shrines to show respect and to pray for good business. At Meiji Jingu in Tokyo, brewers from around the country donate straw-wrapped barrels every year, and these display barrels are empty.
Across from them stand barrels of French wine from Burgundy, which have been offered since 2006 because Emperor Meiji was known to enjoy Western food and wine. Komodaru also show up at celebrations, where people break open the lid of a full barrel with wooden mallets for good luck. I like that a simple barrel can connect a shrine, a brewery and a party.
Is there really sake inside those barrels at the shrine?
Usually not. The stacked barrels are mostly empty display barrels, and the actual sake is offered in bottles. At Meiji Jingu, for example, the shrine explains that its display barrels are empty.
Why do Shinto shrines accept alcohol?
In Shinto, sake made from rice is one of the basic offerings to the gods, along with rice, salt and water. Sharing the offered sake afterward is seen as a way of receiving the gods' blessing.
