A kissaten is not a cafe in the modern chain sense. It is an independent coffee shop, often opened decades ago and run by one person, with dark wood, low lighting, velvet or vinyl seats and cigarette-era decor, and a counter where each cup is brewed individually with a cloth or paper filter.
The coffee is usually dark-roasted and served in a proper cup with a small jug of cream. The food is a fixed repertoire: thick-cut buttered toast, an egg salad sandwich with the crusts off, spaghetti napolitan, pudding, and cream soda with a scoop of ice cream.
In Nagoya and the surrounding region, morning sets give you toast and an egg free with your coffee before eleven, a custom worth planning a breakfast around.
