An ihai is a small wooden tablet that stands for a person who has died. The front shows their Buddhist name and the date of death. A plain wooden one is used at the funeral and is usually replaced with a lacquered one by the memorial on the 49th day. Families keep it in the butsudan, or home Buddhist altar, and offer incense to it.

If you open a Buddhist altar in a Japanese home, you will often see a few black, shiny tablets standing inside. These are ihai, or memorial tablets. Each one stands for a family member who has died. On the front is the Buddhist name the person was given after death, along with the date they passed away.

Their name in life is often written on the back. At the funeral, a temporary tablet made of plain wood is used. In many families, it is replaced with a lacquered one by the memorial service held on the 49th day. After that, the family offers incense, rice, and flowers in front of it and talks to it, almost as if the person were still there.

Practices differ by sect, though. Jodo Shinshu, one of the largest schools of Buddhism in Japan, traditionally does not use tablets at all. To me, the ihai is less about religion and more about keeping someone in the family.

Q

Do people believe the dead person's spirit lives in the tablet?

Some people see it that way, and many temples hold a short ceremony to "bring in" the spirit when a new tablet is made. Others simply see it as a reminder of the person. It depends on the family and the sect.

Q

What happens when there are too many tablets?

Some families switch to a box-shaped tablet with several thin wooden cards inside, one for each ancestor. Others combine older ancestors into one tablet after a set number of years. Temples can help decide what to do.

FACTMany homes, especially newer and smaller ones, have no Buddhist altar at all. Even in Buddhist families, some sects do not use tablets.
