Walk through an older Japanese farmhouse and one room often stands apart: tatami-floored, a little dim, centered on a large dark wooden cabinet whose doors open to reveal gold-lit figures and small memorial tablets. That room is the butsuma, built to hold the butsudan, the household's Buddhist altar, where the family honors deceased relatives with daily offerings of rice, water and incense, and where priests are received for memorial services.
In some regions the altar was kept from facing the household Shinto shrine directly, or facing a doorway or toilet, and the butsuma was positioned accordingly. As Japan urbanized and families moved into apartments with no room to spare, the dedicated butsuma quietly disappeared from new housing. What survives is the object rather than the room: many families that still keep a butsudan now own a compact version, barely larger than a bookshelf, tucked into a living room corner.
