In traditional Buddhist practice, a memorial service called shonanoka was held exactly seven days after a death, the first of several seven-day markers thought to matter for the deceased's journey. Gathering relatives a second time within a week became impractical as families spread out geographically, so most funeral halls now fold shonanoka into the funeral or cremation day itself, right after the main service or at the same altar. The name still appears on funeral schedules even though the timing has shifted.

Buddhist funeral practice in Japan traditionally marks the days after death rather than just the day itself, on the idea that the deceased's spirit passes through a series of judgments before settling, with markers at seven-day intervals. Shonanoka, the seventh day, was the first and most important of these, and relatives were expected to gather again for a short service and a shared meal. That second gathering has become hard to arrange: relatives now often fly in from other cities for the funeral itself and cannot easily return a week later.

The funeral industry responded with what is called kuriage shonanoka, an "advanced" seventh-day service performed on the funeral day, either immediately after the main funeral rite or right after the cremation, using the same gathering of relatives who are already there. It is understood by everyone involved as a practical compression rather than a change in belief, and the later memorials — the forty-ninth day, the first anniversary, and so on — still fall on or near their traditional dates.

QSo is shonanoka still actually held on the seventh day?

Rarely. In most modern funerals it is performed the same day as the funeral or cremation, a practice called kuriage shonanoka, purely because gathering relatives twice within a week is impractical for most families now.

QWhat happens at the service itself?

A Buddhist priest chants a sutra in front of the altar and relatives offer incense one by one, followed by a shared meal called otoki. It is shorter and smaller than the funeral itself.

QDoes moving the date change the meaning?

Families generally treat it as a practical accommodation, not a doctrinal change; the later memorials, like the forty-ninth day, are still usually held close to their traditional timing.
