A hyogushi mounts paintings and calligraphy onto hanging scrolls, folding screens and sliding doors, backing thin, fragile paper or silk with several layers of handmade washi paper and wheat-starch paste so it can be rolled, folded or slid open thousands of times without cracking. The same skills apply to fusuma, the sliding doors that separate rooms in a traditional house, and to reframing old paintings that arrive damaged or discolored. It is a quiet trade: the finished work is meant to draw no attention to the mounting at all.

Most visitors admiring a hanging scroll in a temple or a folding screen in a museum never think about the person who made it displayable at all, and that is exactly the point of a hyogushi's work. A painting or piece of calligraphy on thin paper or silk is far too fragile to roll up or fold on its own, so the hyogushi backs it with several layers of handmade washi paper, glued on with a wheat-starch paste that has to be strong enough to hold for decades yet weak enough to be dissolved and redone during a future restoration.

The same trade covers fusuma, the sliding doors between rooms in a traditional house, which get re-papered every so often as the surface wears or the household wants a change. It is a craft judged by invisibility: a well-mounted scroll should look effortless, with no wrinkles, no visible seams and a tension that lets it hang perfectly flat, and a badly mounted one warps within a year.

QWhy can't you just glue a painting straight onto a hard backing?

A hard backing would crack the moment the piece is rolled or bent, and it could never be removed for cleaning or restoration. Layers of flexible washi and reversible paste keep the piece both durable and repairable.

QHow is this related to fusuma sliding doors?

A hyogushi mounts both. Fusuma are built the same way as a scroll, in layers of paper glued over a wooden lattice frame, and the same shop that mounts scrolls usually re-papers fusuma too.

QIs this trade dying out?

It has shrunk as fewer homes have tokonoma alcoves for scrolls and fewer rooms use fusuma, but the trade survives on restoration work for temples, museums and antique dealers, which keeps demand steady if small.
