Hachiman is a deity associated with the legendary emperor Ojin and, from the medieval period, with warriors. Shrines dedicated to Hachiman spread across the country as samurai families established branches wherever they held land, which is why the name appears in so many towns.

If you travel in Japan you will pass a great many shrines called Hachimangu or Hachiman-jinja, and there is a historical reason for that density. Hachiman is a deity identified with Emperor Ojin, a semi-legendary figure, and the cult spread from a shrine in Kyushu. What made it national was warfare.

From the medieval period Hachiman was regarded as a protector of warriors, and the Minamoto clan in particular adopted him as their tutelary deity. When a warrior family gained land, they would invite a division of the deity to a new shrine there, so the network expanded with the spread of samurai power.

The shrine at Kamakura, founded as the Minamoto base, is the best-known example. Hachiman is also a clear case of the mixing of Shinto and Buddhism before the Meiji separation, since he was for centuries called a bodhisattva and served by Buddhist clergy at shrine-temples.

QWhat do people pray for there?

Historically victory and protection in battle; today success in general, safety of the family, and particularly anything competitive such as exams, sport or business.

QWhy does the name appear in so many place names?

Because a neighborhood often took its name from the local shrine. A district called Hachiman usually grew around one, and the same pattern applies to other shrine names.

QWhat is the dove connection?

The dove is treated as Hachiman's messenger, and at some Hachiman shrines the character on the plaque is written so that its strokes form two doves. Amulets and sweets in dove shapes are sold there.
