Hashima, nicknamed Gunkanjima because its silhouette resembles a battleship, is a 480-meter island where undersea coal was mined from the late 1800s. At its peak in 1960 more than 5,000 people lived there on sixteen acres, in Japan's first large concrete apartment blocks. The mine closed in 1974 and everyone left within months. Boat tours land on a fixed walkway; the rest is collapsing.

Gunkanjima is an island about fifteen kilometers off Nagasaki, and the nickname — battleship island — comes from its silhouette, a wall of concrete rising straight out of the sea. Undersea coal was mined here from the late nineteenth century, and because the island is tiny and the mine needed workers on site, the company built upward: Japan's first large reinforced-concrete apartment blocks went up here in 1916, decades before they were normal on the mainland.

At its peak in 1960, more than 5,000 people lived on an island you can walk around in twenty minutes, with a school, a hospital, shops, a cinema and a rooftop kindergarten. Then Japan switched from coal to oil, the mine closed in January 1974, and within three months everyone had gone. It sat untouched for decades.

It is now a World Heritage site as part of Japan's industrial revolution listing, and that listing is contested: Korean and Chinese laborers, including those brought under wartime mobilization, worked in the mine, and how that history is presented has been the subject of ongoing disagreement between Japan and South Korea.

QCan you walk around the island?

No. Tours land at one point and you stay on a short fixed walkway. The buildings are unsafe and collapsing, and landing is canceled in rough seas.

QWhy did everyone leave so fast?

The island existed only for the mine. When it closed there was no other work, no farmland and nothing to stay for, so the company relocated the residents.

QWhy is the World Heritage listing controversial?

Because Korean and Chinese laborers, including wartime conscripted workers, were used at the site, and Japan and South Korea disagree over how fully that is explained to visitors.
