Esports means organized competitive video gaming with audiences and prize money. Japan, despite being a major game-producing country, was slow to build a professional scene. Reasons usually given include consumer rules that limited prize money offered by a game's own publisher, a market centered on home consoles and handhelds rather than PC, and arcades that were competitive but not commercial. An industry body formed in 2018 and began issuing player licenses, and high schools and local governments now run tournaments.

There is a puzzle in Japanese gaming: the country produced many of the world's best-known games and consoles, yet arrived late to competitive esports. Several explanations are usually offered. One is legal. Japanese consumer protection rules limit the value of prizes a business can offer to promote its own product, and a publisher putting up a large purse for a tournament of its own game ran into that framework, so organizers structured events carefully or kept prizes small.

Another is the shape of the market: Japanese players gravitated to home consoles and handhelds and to single-player or cooperative games, while global esports grew up around PCs and online team shooters. A third is the arcade. Japan had intensely competitive arcade scenes, especially in fighting games, but they were local and cash-based rather than sponsored and broadcast.

Things have changed. An industry association formed in 2018 and issues professional licenses, teams have sponsors, tournaments fill halls, and prefectures and high schools run their own competitions. Japanese fighting game players have long been world class, which was true before anyone here used the word esports.

QWhat is the prize money problem exactly?

Japanese rules on premiums and misleading representations cap the value of prizes a business may offer in connection with promoting its own goods. A publisher funding a big purse for a tournament of its own title sits close to that line, so organizers have used structures such as paying professionals as performance fees rather than prizes.

QSo Japan isn't good at competitive gaming?

Not true in fighting games, where Japanese players have been dominant for decades and where the arcade scene produced a deep talent pool. The gap has been in the commercial infrastructure around competition, and in team-based PC genres, rather than in player skill.

QIs it taken seriously now?

Increasingly. There are professional teams with sponsors, a national sports festival demonstration event, high school and prefectural tournaments, and vocational courses. It is still smaller than in Korea or China, and opinion among older people about gaming as a career remains mixed.
