Enma is the king of the underworld, and in Japanese Buddhist belief, he is the judge of the dead. His name comes from Yama, an ancient god from India, and the idea came to Japan by way of China. That is why statues of Enma wear the robes and hat of a Chinese official.
People believed that after death, they would be judged by ten kings, one after another, and Enma was the most famous of them. He looks at everything a person did in life and decides where they will go. Even today, parents tell children that if they lie, Enma will pull out their tongue.
The word enma-cho, Enma's record book, is also used as a joke for a teacher's grade book. There's a softer side, too. In Japan, people came to say that Enma is another form of Jizo, the gentle figure who saves people. I find it interesting that the scariest face in Japanese temples is meant to be fair, not cruel.
