Arashiyama sits where Kyoto meets the hills to its west. The landmark is Togetsukyo, a low bridge across the Katsura river, with wooded slopes behind it. The area has been a retreat for the Kyoto aristocracy for over a thousand years.

Arashiyama is the western edge of Kyoto, and it is probably the second thing people go to see after the city center. The landmark is Togetsukyo, a long low bridge over the Katsura river. Its name means bridge crossing to the moon, and it is said to come from a retired emperor in the thirteenth century remarking that the moon looked as though it were crossing the bridge.
Just north of it is Tenryuji, founded in 1339 to pray for the soul of an emperor, whose garden was laid out by the monk Muso Soseki and still uses the mountain behind as part of the composition. The temple is a World Heritage site. Then there is the bamboo path, which I should be honest about.
It is genuinely beautiful and it is genuinely short: a few hundred meters, walkable in five minutes, and from mid-morning it is shoulder to shoulder. Go at seven in the morning and it is a different place. The wider area rewards more time than most visitors give it, especially upriver and on the quieter north side.

The famous stretch is a few hundred meters and takes about five minutes at a normal pace. Almost every photograph you have seen is from the same short section, taken before the crowds arrive.
有名な区間は数百メートルで、普通に歩いて5分ほどです。見たことのある写真は、ほぼすべて同じ短い区間で、人が来る前に撮られたものです。

Before eight in the morning, or after dark. The bamboo path has no gate and no closing time. Midday in autumn is the single worst combination.

It is a steep twenty-minute climb, and the macaques are wild and roam freely. The view over Kyoto from the top is the real reward. Do not bring food, and do not make eye contact with them.

渡月橋の名は、鎌倉時代に亀山上皇が「くまなき月の渡るに似る」と述べたことに由来するとされる。現在の橋は昭和初期に架け替えられたもので、欄干は木造だが橋脚は鉄筋コンクリートである。天龍寺は暦応2年（1339年）、後醍醐天皇の菩提を弔うために足利尊氏が創建し、夢窓疎石が開山した。曹源池庭園は日本で最初に国の史跡・特別名勝に指定された庭で、背後の嵐山と亀山を借景として取り込んでいる。1994年に「古都京都の文化財」として世界文化遺産に登録された。嵐山一帯は平安時代から貴族の別荘地として知られてきた。
