今日は何の日

  1. 霜降(そうこう)Soko (Frost Falls)

Today is Soko, which means "frost falls." It's one of the 24 seasonal points of the old calendar, and in 2026 it falls on October 23rd. Mornings get noticeably colder, frost starts to appear in the mountains and the north, and the autumn colors start moving down from the mountains toward the towns. It's about the time many families get out the kotatsu, a low table with a heater underneath.

    今日は「霜が降りる」という意味の霜降です。昔の暦の二十四節気の一つで、2026年は10月23日にあたります。朝の冷え込みがはっきり強くなり、山や北の地方では霜が見られはじめ、紅葉が山から里へと下りてきます。下にヒーターの付いた低い机、こたつを出す家が増えてくるころです。

On October 23rd, 1869, work began on a public telegraph line between Tokyo and Yokohama. 1869年10月23日、東京と横浜の間で公衆電信線の工事が始まりました。この日は1950年に記念日となり、1956年にいまの「電信電話記念日」という名前になりました。まだ明治2年のことで、日本はこの新しい技術をとても早く取り入れたことになります。

  3. 1988年制定津軽弁の日Tsugaru Dialect Day

Tsugaru-ben, the dialect of western Aomori, is famous for being hard to follow, even for other Japanese people. Tsugaru Dialect Day began in 1988 to honor Takagi Kyozo, an eye doctor and poet who wrote poems in the dialect. He died on October 23rd, 1987. Every year, people gather to enjoy poems and stories told in Tsugaru-ben.

    青森県の西部の方言である津軽弁は、ほかの地方の日本人にも聞き取りにくいことで知られています。「津軽弁の日」は、津軽弁で詩を書いた眼科医で詩人の高木恭造をしのんで、1988年に始まりました。高木恭造が亡くなったのが、1987年10月23日です。毎年この日のころには、津軽弁の詩や話を楽しむ催しが開かれます。

霜降の次に来る二十四節気はどれ?

外国人に聞かれたら

Q

Do people in Japan all speak the same Japanese?

日本の人は、みんな同じ日本語を話しているの?

A

Not exactly. Everyone learns standard Japanese at school and hears it on TV, so we can all understand each other. But at home and with friends, a lot of people speak their local dialect. Some dialects, like Tsugaru-ben in Aomori or the traditional speech of Okinawa, can be really hard for people from other areas to follow.

そうとも言えません。学校で標準語を学び、テレビでも聞くので、お互いに話は通じます。でも家や友だちとのあいだでは、地元の方言を話す人がたくさんいます。青森の津軽弁や沖縄の言葉のように、ほかの地方の人にはとても聞き取りにくい方言もあります。

今日のひとこと英語

It's getting chilly in the mornings.

朝、冷えるようになってきましたね。

「冷える」「肌寒い」くらいの寒さには、cold より chilly がぴったりです。cold は本格的な寒さに使います。「〜になってきた」という変化は、It's getting ... の形で言うと自然です。
