外国人に教えたい日本語の略語55選|コンビニ・スマホ・あけおめを英語で説明
日本語は長い言葉をどんどん縮めるので、外国人は「コンビニって何の略?」「あけおめって何?」とよく首をかしげます。コンビニ・スマホのように普通の言葉になったもの、あけおめのように仲間うちで使うもの、「〜る」を付けて動詞にしたものまで、元の言葉と使ってよい場面を英語で説明できるようにまとめました。英語の説明と例文をそのまま使えば、外国人の友だちに略語の仕組みごと教えられます。
📝 教える前に知っておきたいこと
- 外来語でいちばん多い縮め方は、それぞれの部分から2音ずつ取る形です。パソコン(パーソナル・コンピューター)、リモコン(リモート・コントロール)、スマホ(スマートフォン)と例を挙げると伝わりやすくなります。
- 日本語の長い名前も同じように縮めます。東京大学は東大、国際連合は国連です。
- 名詞に「る」を付けると、くだけた動詞になります。メモがメモる、ミスがミスるになります。友だち同士ならよいけれど、職場ではだらしなく聞こえると伝えましょう。
- コンビニ・スマホ・パソコンのような語は標準的な日本語で、どんな場面でも使えます。あけおめ・あざすのようなあいさつはくだけた言い方なので、目上の人には元の形を使うよう教えましょう。
- 略語は古びるのが早い言葉です。ここで「古い」としたものは通じはしますが、古い教科書で日本語を覚えた人のように聞こえることがある、と添えておくと親切です。
