豆知識

supersede はラテン語の「上に（super）座る（sedere）」から来た語で、「上に座る」から「取って代わる」という意味になった。sedere は sit と同じ祖先を持つ語だ。superseding indictment が出ると、前の起訴状は効力を失い、その後の裁判は新しい起訴状にもとづいて進む。大きな事件では何度も出し直されることがあり、記事に second superseding indictment（2度目の差し替え起訴状）のように回数がつくこともある。似た super- の語には supervise（上から見る→監督する）がある。
