Sendai is the biggest city in Tohoku, the northeastern part of Japan's main island, about ninety minutes from Tokyo by shinkansen. Its story starts with Date Masamune, a warlord who lost the sight of one eye as a child and is often shown with an eyepatch and a helmet with a huge crescent moon. In the early 1600s, he built a castle on a hill above the river and laid out the town below it.
The castle never had a main tower, so what you see on the hill today is mostly stone walls and a famous statue of Masamune on horseback. Sendai calls itself the City of Trees. That name comes from the trees that samurai families grew around their houses and from the forested hills near the castle, and today it's kept alive by streets lined with zelkova trees.
In August, the city hosts one of Japan's best-known Tanabata festivals, with huge paper decorations hanging over the shopping streets. And if you go, people will tell you to try grilled beef tongue, which became the local specialty after World War II.
仙台は、本州の北東部、東北でいちばん大きな都市で、東京から新幹線で90分ほどです。町の歴史は伊達政宗から始まります。子どものころに片目の視力を失った武将で、眼帯と、大きな三日月の付いた兜の姿で描かれることがよくあります。1600年代の初め、政宗は川を見下ろす丘の上に城を築き、その下に町を割りつけました。

He lost the sight in his right eye after an illness as a child, which is commonly said to be smallpox. The eyepatch mostly comes from later dramas and pictures. He is said to have asked to be painted with both eyes, so some old portraits show him that way.
子どものころの病気で右目の視力を失ったからで、その病気は天然痘だったとよく言われます。眼帯の姿は主に後の時代のドラマや絵から来たものです。本人が両目で描くよう望んだとされ、古い肖像画には両目で描かれたものもあります。

It's said that a restaurant owner in Sendai started serving grilled beef tongue after World War II, and it caught on. Today it's usually served with barley rice, oxtail soup and pickles.

It's held from August 6th to 8th, a month later than the July 7th Tanabata in many places. Holding it a month late keeps it closer to the season of the old lunar calendar.
8月6日から8日に開かれ、多くの土地の7月7日の七夕より1か月遅れです。1か月遅らせることで、旧暦の七夕に近い季節になります。
