Randori is the free-practice part of a judo class. Two partners grab each other's jackets and try to throw each other, moving freely, much like in a real match. But there's no referee and no winner, and people often change partners after each round. It's where students learn to use the techniques they've drilled against someone who is resisting.

A typical judo class has two very different kinds of training. One is kata, where the moves are set in advance and partners take turns, almost like a dance. The other is randori, which is usually translated as "free practice."
In randori, two people grab each other's jackets and try to throw each other with whatever technique they can make work. It looks a lot like a match, but the goal is different. There's no referee, no score, and no winner. You try new techniques, you get thrown, and then you get up and try again.
Kano Jigoro, who founded Kodokan judo in 1882, saw kata and randori as the two pillars of training, and that idea is still taught today. Before beginners are allowed to do randori, they spend a lot of time learning ukemi, the way to fall safely. Honestly, my first randori was exhausting, but it was the first time judo felt real to me.
Is randori the same as a match?
No. It looks similar, but there's no referee and nobody keeps score. The point is to practice, so you're expected to try techniques even if they might fail.
Do other martial arts have randori?
Some do, but the word can mean different things. In aikido, randori often means defending against several attackers at once. Kendo has a similar kind of free practice called jigeiko, and karate has kumite.
Is it dangerous for beginners?
It can be if you can't fall safely, so beginners learn ukemi first. Instructors also pair them with experienced partners who control their strength.
MYTHRandori is a fight to see who is stronger.
FACTRandori is practice, not a contest. Good partners hold back enough to let each other try techniques, and getting thrown is part of learning.
