Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba in the first half of the twentieth century. The techniques redirect an attacker's force into throws and joint locks rather than meeting it head on. The largest organizations hold no competitions at all, on the principle that winning is not the goal, so practice is done in pairs with the roles agreed in advance.

Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba, who died in 1969. It draws on older jujutsu and sword traditions, but its organizing idea is different: instead of blocking an attack, you enter, turn with it, and let the attacker's own momentum carry them into a throw or a joint lock.

The most distinctive feature is that the largest schools hold no competitions. There are no tournaments, no medals and no weight classes, because the founder held that contest encourages the wrong attitude. Practice is done in pairs, with one person attacking and one responding, and you swap.

That makes aikido unusual among martial arts and also makes it easy to criticize, since a practitioner may never face a genuinely resisting opponent. Practitioners tend to answer that the aim was never to produce fighters.

QWhy are there no competitions?

Because the founder taught that the art is about resolving conflict rather than defeating an opponent, and that scoring points would distort the practice. Some later schools disagreed and do hold competitions, so it depends which organization you join.

QDoes it actually work in a real fight?

That is argued about, including inside aikido. The honest answer is that training against a cooperating partner builds movement and awareness but not the experience of a resisting opponent, and practitioners who want that usually cross-train.

MYTHAikido is an ancient samurai art.

FACTIt is modern. It was formed in the twentieth century from older traditions, and the name and the organization date from that period.
