Karate is often assumed to be from mainland Japan, but it developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom, which is now Okinawa, a separate kingdom with its own language and its own trade links to China. Chinese martial arts came in through those links and combined with local fighting traditions.
The name was originally written with characters meaning Chinese hand, and was changed in the twentieth century to characters meaning empty hand, both because the sound was the same and because the political climate favored a Japanese reading.
Karate reached mainland Japan in the 1920s, largely through Gichin Funakoshi, and from there went worldwide, helped considerably by American servicemen stationed in Okinawa after the war. Training is built around kata, fixed sequences performed alone, which preserve techniques in a form that can be practiced without a partner. It became an Olympic sport for the first time at the Tokyo Games.
空手は日本本土のものと思われがちですが、発展したのは琉球王国、今の沖縄です。独自の言語を持ち、中国と独自の交易路を持つ別の王国でした。その交易を通じて中国の武術が入り、現地の手の技と結びつきました。
名称はもともと「唐手」、すなわち中国の手と書き、20世紀に「空手」の字に改められました。音が同じであったことに加え、当時の政治的な空気も背景にあります。空手が日本本土に伝わったのは1920年代で、船越義珍の働きが大きく、そこから世界へ広まりました。

Karate was taught privately in small groups in Okinawa before it was systematized, so different teachers preserved different emphases. Shotokan, Goju-ryu, Shito-ryu and Wado-ryu are the four styles recognized in international competition.
体系化される前の沖縄では、少人数への私的な指導が中心だったため、師ごとに重点が違いました。国際大会で認められる四大流派は松濤館流・剛柔流・糸東流・和道流です。

Tameshiwari is a genuine practice for testing focus and technique, but it is a demonstration, not the core of training. Most karate practice is kata and controlled sparring.
試し割りは集中と技を確かめる本当の稽古ですが、あくまで実演であって稽古の中心ではありません。空手の稽古の大半は型と約束組手です。

空手のもとになったのは琉球の「手（ティー）」と、中国から伝わった武術が結びついたもの。琉球王国は1879年の琉球処分まで独立した王国だった。「唐手」から「空手」への表記変更は1930年代に定着し、船越義珍らが用いた。船越は1922年に東京で演武を行い、本土普及の契機となった。空手は2020年東京オリンピックで初めて正式種目となったが、2024年パリ大会では実施されなかった。沖縄には空手の道場が数多くあり、沖縄県は2017年に沖縄空手会館を開設している。世界の空手人口は1億人規模と推計されることがあるが、統計の取り方によって幅がある。
